Travel From Home to the legendary Aspen, Colorado

It’s impossible to fault an Australian summer – our beautiful beaches, sleepy coastal towns and long lazy days in the sun is all undeniably amazing.  But it’s hard not to miss our annual overseas snow adventures, as it’s right about this time each year that we’re normally jumping on a plane bound for North America, Japan or Europe!

If you’re feeling the same way, head over to our Virtual Snow Show – www.thesnowshow.com.au where you can Travel From Home, start planning your 2021/22 snow holidays and even win a dream holiday to Whistler next season. For more inspiration, read on for our travel guide to Aspen, the iconic Colorado mountain town with four snow resorts!

Our #TRAVELFROMHOME Guide to Aspen Snowmass

Consistently rated one of the world’s top snow destinations, Aspen is known for its incredible skiing and snowboarding, as well as its variety of outdoor activities, arts programs, cultural events, vibrant mining history and cosmopolitan nightlife. Comprised of four mountains – Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass, all accessible on the one lift pass and connected by a free shuttle, Aspen is one of the largest combined ski areas in North America. The skiing and snowboarding are world-class and varied, with something for every level across the four mountains, an incredible ski school, kids ‘Elk Camp’ with tubing and mountain coaster, and a dedicated beginners mountain, Buttermilk. People flock from around the world to enjoy the famous après ski bars and dine in world class restaurants, as well as experience high profile events such as the Winter X Games which take place at the end of January each year.

Fast facts:

  • Aspen receives over 7 meters of natural snowfall each year.
  • Average winter temperatures are very mild and typically above 5ºC
  • Colorado averages over 300 days of sunshine and blue skies annually

Astonishing mountainous views surround the resort, which are best enjoyed from the outdoor heated pool and hot tub. The Little Nell’s 92 guest rooms and suites each have a unique floorplan and offer a gas log fireplace and breath-taking views. A ski concierge team is on hand to tune equipment, warm your boots, store equipment overnight and can also arrange for rentals and instruction.  With a range of renowned restaurants and bars including Element 47, Ajax Tavern and The Wine Bar on site, the hotel also manages the famous Oasis Champagne Bar – the mobile champagne and caviar bar that is towed by snowcat across the slopes, popping up at various mountain locations.

Eat – The Reimagined High Alpine Restaurant

New to Snowmass Mountain this season, is the High Alpine restaurant, an evolution to the legacy of long-time favourite Gwyn’s, and a newly envisioned take on mountain dining. Sitting atop the Snowmass Alpine Springs Lift, High Alpine features expansive deck seating, a large wood-burning fireplace, a wrap-around bar, and multi-level seating walled by large windows. The restaurant continues the tradition of market-style food and beverage options with various stations serving freshly prepared pizza, homemade soups and stews, fresh salads, grilled burgers, and more. As in all of the Aspen Snowmass mountain restaurants, High Alpine provides food choices that are sourced from a local network of sustainable farmers and partners.

Play – Snowmass Luminescence

With a thriving arts and culture scene, there’s always plenty of entertainment on offer at Aspen. This season, Aspen Snowmass and Snowmass Tourism have launched Snowmass Luminescence, an interactive art and light exhibit that connects the Snowmass Base Village and the Snowmass Mall that immerses guests in a dazzling display of art and light. Strolling through The Tunnel, guests find themselves inside an interactive series of six LED illuminated walkways and arches. In addition, two world-renowned, immersive light exhibits will be featured, Submergence by Squidsoup and Prismatica by Creos and Raw Design. When the lifts close at Aspen Snowmass, things really light up!
