LAKE TAHOE, NEVADA
Spectacular skiing and winter adventures in the Sierra Nevada mountains
Renowned for its limitless outdoor winter adventures, Nevada is a long time favourite with active travellers. Whether you’re dropping into the perfect line at a Lake Tahoe ski resort, snowshoeing up to take in the magnificent views, or jumping aboard a two-horse open sleigh with the family, the Silver State’s winter action beckons the powder pursuer in all of us.
THE SKI RESORTS
Heavenly Mountain Resort
On Lake Tahoe’s south side, you’ll find the state-straddling Heavenly Mountain Resort – famous among skiers and riders for its unmatched 3,500 vertical feet and 97 runs across 5,000 acres. It’s a great destination for families, thanks to the Heavenly Adventure Peak play park, which offers snow tubing, sledding, and the super fun Blue Streak Zip Line.
Be blown away by the jaw-dropping, wide-angle vistas of Lake Tahoe, ski or snowboard over the Nevada-California state line, ride the Heavenly Gondola, and kick back in the 14,720-square-foot Tamarack Lodge for some of the best on-mountain restaurants in the world. Be sure to hit Heavenly Village for great shopping, a huge range of restaurants and bars, open-air ice skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides and other entertainment.
Diamond Peak
Over on North Lake Tahoe, you’ll find the small-but-mighty Diamond Peak Ski Resort, also known as Tahoe’s hidden gem. With a welcoming atmosphere, its biggest drawcard is the basin’s incomparable “Big Blue” panoramas—especially from the Snowflake Lodge deck, where skiers and riders can reward themselves with hot cocoa or a signature Snowflake Snuggler from the Million Dollar View Bar. Expect friendly and relaxed vibes, crowdless runs, and some of the best terrain in Tahoe.
Mt. Rose Ski Resort
Another local favourite on the North Side is Mt. Rose Ski Resort. Mt. Rose boasts the highest base in Tahoe and has been a local fave since the 1930s. These days, it brings skiers and snowboarders over 1200+ acres and 60 trails accessed by the resort’s eight lifts. Mt Rose offers something for everyone with 50% of the trails graded expert or advanced, and 50% beginner or intermediate. In addition to its assortment of exciting trails, Mt. Rose offers three terrain parks: Badlands and DoubleDown, both of which are located in the Slide Bowl and filled with table tops, boxes and rails plus Pondo Park, a progression park on the Main Side of the resort.
WHAT TO DO IN NEVADA
Beyond the incredible skiing and snowboarding, there’s so much else to discover…
Snowshoeing Mount Rose Wilderness Area
One of our favourite things to do in Lake Tahoe is to head to Mount Rose Wilderness Area, to explore the stunning snowshoe trails. A pretty cruisy, approximately 1.5 km walk takes you up to Chickadee Ridge for the most breathtaking views over the Lake. After your hike, head down the hill to the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, and warm up by the fire at the Lone Eagle Grille. The sprawling restaurant and lounge boasts big, beautiful fireplaces and towering windows with incredible views, but the real action is outside—at the lakefront fire pit. Grab an Adirondack chair, sip on a hot buttered rum, and gaze at the stars reflecting off the lake.
Mount Rose Meadows
You can’t visit Tahoe in the wintertime without heading to Mt. Rose Meadows, just north of Incline Village. Filled with some of the best sledding, tubing and snowshoeing ops for everyone from first-timers to snowy savants and everyone in between, consider this your HQ for winter family fun. Rent sleds and snowshoes in Reno or Lake Tahoe, then head for the meadows.
Sleigh Rides
A Reno Tahoe sleigh ride is one of winter’s most magical activities. A horse-drawn sleigh ride is a serene experience and a relaxing way to take in Reno Tahoe’s picturesque natural landscapes. Become one with nature as you ride freely through trees covered in thickets of snow surrounded by the Sierra Nevada.
Arts & Culture
One of the hidden gems of Lake Tahoe is its arts & culture scene. Museums and galleries line quaint streets where you can discover local artists and learn more about Lake Tahoe’s native residents and historical sites.
GET A LITTLE OUT THERE ON A ROAD TRIP
Whether you’re flying in and out of Las Vegas or San Francisco, there’s plenty of ways to get the most out of your travels with an epic Nevada road trip.
The Rubies Route Road Trip will take you into the Ruby Mountains, known as the Swiss Alps of Nevada where you can take a backcountry tour for some of the best snowmobiling in Nevada, or ‘Ride the Rubies’ with the USA’s oldest, family-owned heli-skiing outfit, dropping into some of the driest, fluffiest snow in the country.
While not widely known, there’s another ski field just 45 minutes outside of Las Vegas, Lee Canyon. Well suited to beginners, the resort has had some recent expansions and offers 195 acres of lift served terrain as well as 250 acres of hike-to terrain.
