The year is off to a VERY snowy start – updates from our global resort partners on season 2023!

There’s been a lot of hype leading up to this snow season, and it’s hardly a surprise. Being the first full season we are able to travel internationally since 2019, and with Japan finally opening up, the final piece of the puzzle was going to be big snowfalls.

We are so happy to report that winter has really kicked into gear now, with heavy snowfalls and great conditions being seen at all our key resort destinations across Canada, US, Japan and Europe. And the good news is, things don’t appear to be slowing down any time soon, with a long forecast of continuing snow through until April. Read on for a wrap of the good times and incredible snow conditions happening around the world.

If you have a trip coming up, we’re sure this will get you feeling excited! And if you’re thinking about a late-season or Easter snow holiday, reach out to our friendly team on [email protected] to chat about the best deals and destination for you.

USA

Following the arctic blast experienced across the US in December and winter storms continuing into January, many ski regions are reporting record snowfall and really strong conditions. Some of our favourite Utah resorts around Salt Lake City are enjoying an epic season with plenty of that light, fluffy snow resulting from cold storm air passing over the Great Salt Lakes – Park City Mountain just received around 45cm of fresh powder in one day!

While just east, Colorado resorts have built up a healthy snow base with December’s cold weather patterns. The Aspen mountains are a top performer with Snowmass collecting 1.7m of snow in the past month – that’s 36% above average!

Our top picks – Park City & Aspen Snowmass

JAPAN

Resorts in Hokkaido have been feeling the benefits of La Nina with big snowfalls really starting to hammer the resorts leading up to Christmas. One local reporter in Niseko referred to conditions as “mind blowing – with a heroic dump and freezing conditions.” There’s now a great base and excellent coverage across most resorts with continuing snowfall and cold conditions meaning that famous Japanese powder is in strong supply.

Our top pick – Rusutsu

CANADA

It’s been a great start to winter for Canadian resorts in the West Coastal Mountains, with a strong storm cycle delivering dumpings of snow in the second half of December. Whistler Blackcomb’s upper mountain received 2.5m in two weeks! And with snow continuing to fall, conditions are excellent and the atmosphere around the village is buzzing! It’s a similar story across other BC resorts, with good bases of 1.4m on Sun Peaks and 1.5m on Revelstoke.

It’s best in the west, but further inland, Banff & Lake Louise resorts have steady fresh snowfall and depths of around 1m depending on altitude.

Our top picks – Whistler & Sun Peaks

EUROPE

Despite an early winter “warm wave” experienced by some European countries, there are still plenty of resorts with good conditions this season, and things are picking up. There’s been a good volume of snowfall across French resorts and the Italian Dolomites this past week, as well as in Switzerland, with Zermatt currently sitting at a snow base of 1.2m

Our top picks – Val d’Isère & Val Thorens, France
