When it comes to deep powder snow, there is no better place in the world to ski than Japan.
On top of the pristine and perfect skiing conditions, Japan is also a tremendous destination for people of all ages, backgrounds and ability levels because of the shopping, nature and cultural experiences on offer. And when booking a ski trip to Japan, Hokkaido is a must when it comes to the places you will visit.
Hokkaido is the island at the very northern tip of Japan and is well known for its natural beauty, including its mountain ranges, crystal clear blue skies and water and – of course – its lush and generous snowfall.
You will find some of the best peaks in all of Japan on Hokkaido including Mount Asahi (2290m), Mount Fuji look-a-like Mount Rishiri and Mount Yotei. Also on view are off-shore, active volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire, the world heritage Shiretoko National Park, the Mount Apoi and Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano geo-parks and multiple natural hot springs that dot the island.
Of all the natural wonders, what we love most about Hokkaido is of course the many world-class snow resorts that truly make the island a must-visit destination for holiday makers of all interests and abilities – amateurs to seasoned experts, families, couples, singles and really anyone who has any enthusiasm towards skiing, snowboarding or just the incredible ski resort lifestyle and culture found here.
What sets Hokkaido aside from the rest
The weather patterns that engulf Hokkaido make it picture-perfect for skiing during the winter months and into spring, with consistent cold air blown across from Siberia, ensuring there is reliable fresh powder snow on offer.
Combined with the higher altitude and proximity to the ocean, you are going to get crisp, light, dry snow and great coverage across seemingly endless terrain that you can ride all day long on your ski holiday. The ski season is also longer in Hokkaido than the rest of Japan which allows for extended and flexible travel windows
Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and makes for a great central destination or starting point for exploring the outlying ski resorts dotted all over the island. You will also find remnants of the 1972 Winter Olympics around the city for a historical tour of that era and there are even ski hills and jumps from the Games you can try out.
From Sapporo, you can head in any direction to find a wide range of incredible ski resorts all over the island, each with their own individual charm and access to perfect conditions. Because they are all in relatively close proximity, you can visit several resorts within the one trip. A fun itinerary option could easily include a road trip through Niseko, Kiroro, Furano and Rusutsu. Check out our accommodation options in Rusutsu.
